its the third book in Jules Verne's trilogy. I would recommend reading from the very first book: Captain Grant's Children, Twenty Thousand Leagues under the Seas and then this one: the Mysterious Island. From the start the connection between books is not really visible but at the end of the Mysterious Island you get the connection. Have fun :)

Das Gelesene vermag im (dazu bereiten) Leser diese Art von Kopfkino zu starten, welche durchaus angenehm und spannend empfunden werden kann. Die Erzählung bietet nicht nur einen Ausflug in die Vergangenheit sondern auch Gelegenheit, Mußestunden zu genießen.

Technically, MYSTERIOUS ISLAND is Jules Verne's sequel to his brilliant 20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA. In reality, the only part of MYSTERIOUS ISLAND that really makes it a seqeul is the fact that a few pages are used to reveal the secrets of 20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA. Except for those few pages, MYSTERIOUS ISLAND stands on its own. You can read and understand MYSTERIOUS ISLAND even if you have not read 20,000 THOUSAND LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA. However, since both of the books are so good, I recommend reading both of them anyway.MYSTERIOUS ISLAND is about several people who are stranded on a deserted island. Throughout the course of the book, these people use their minds to develop technology to keep themselves alive and to make their lives better. This book is very rich and imaginative with many ideas. Also a lot of the story concerns the people finding different animals on the island. Basically, whenever a new kind of animal was discovered, the primary concern was how to capture it and kill it and eat it. I myself am a vegetarian, but I still was able to relate to and appreciate the joy and happiness that the people had anytime they found a new kind of animal. Anyway, this book is a lot of fun and I highly recommend it.

A very difficult yet satisfying book to read, this build slowly from utter bleakness to an enthralling sense of wonder. Having seen the 1961 movie, I was astonished at how LITTLE of the book actually made it to the screen-- and there were NO monsters here! Ironically, the trained orangutan-butler that would have been at home in a Disney film was one of the things left out of the film version. Having been surprised that the book 20,000 LEAGUES actually left Captain Nemo's background a total mystery right to the end, Verne finally reveals his true identity here-- and one can tell nobody in Hollywood's been reading this book. While it basically stands on its own, Verne's MYSTERIOUS ISLAND is actually a sequel to 2 previous books: 20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA, and the more obscure CAPTAIN GRANT'S CHILDREN, the latter of which I believe served as the inspiration for the Disney film IN SEARCH OF THE CASTAWAYS! With Verne's interest in minute detail, I came away feeling this book could serve as not only a rousing adventure story, but as a wonderful manual for anyone wanting to start a new civilization completely from scratch.

In the tradition of Robinson Crusoe but unmistakenly Jules Verne, Mysterious Island depicts human ingenuity, resilience and nature.Harding, with his crew, step by step recreates civilization in its purest form. That includes the element of human organization in its simplest and most effective form. The society is made up of members who are earnest, friendly and selfless and a leader who is trustworty, compassionate and unassuming.Jules Verne, throughout his books, portrayed his main characters as decent and noble. His personal view may be that all humans are decent underneath. Only when subjected to ills of over-civilization, they become destructive.Mysterious Island is not only enjoyable with interesting plot with scientific support, but it is also uplifting in human spirit. I highly recommend this book to readers of all ages.

Das völlig nüchtern beschriebene Leben der Autorin empfand ich als sehr bedrückend. Schon von frühester Kindheit an werden die in die Sekte hineingeborenen Kinder einer Gehirnwäsche unterzogen und sie sind folglich gar nicht in der Lage richtig und falsch zu unterscheiden. Ein "normales" Leben kennen sie nicht und so nehmen es die jungen oder eigentlich jugendlichen Frauen auch widerstandslos hin, gegen ihren Willen mit bedeutend älteren Männern verheiratet zu werden.Ich empfinde größte Hochachtung für den Mut dieser Frau, diese Polygamistensekte völlig mittellos dafür aber mit 8 minderjährigen Kindern zu verlassen. Dass ihr diese Flucht gelungen ist, grenzt an ein Wunder und ich bin wirlich sehr beeindruckt, mit welcher Willensstärke sie sich für's Leben in Freiheit entschieden hat!Interessant fand ich auch die Einblicke in das Alltagsleben von Polygamisten, dass sich zB die vielen Ehefrauen ständig um die Gunst des Ehemannes buhlen, um sich und ihre Kinder zu schützen oder um auf diese Weise mehr Ressourcen (auch in Form von Nahrung) zu erhalten. Das ist einfach unglaublich und man kann sich so eine Situation als "normaler" Mensch kaum vorstellen.Fazit: unglaublich berührendes Buch - das eigene Leben erscheint plötzlich wieder soooo einfach! :-)

Frauen haben einfach zu gehorchen, sittsam zu sein, den Haushalt zu bewerkstelligen und ein Kind nach dem anderen zu gebären, während die Männer unter dem Deckmantel ihrer "Religion" alles dürfen, sogar minderjährige Mädchen heiraten und wenn es die 10. Ehefrau ist. Mich hat das Buch so bewegt, das ich stellenweise pausieren musste. Carolyn Jessop ist eine mutige Frau!

Ich habe noch nie ein Buch mit diesem Inhalt gelesen. Es ist unwahrscheinlich spannend aber auch dramatisch. Das in der heutigen Zeit Sekten existierren, die solche Macht ausüben, Menschen einer Gehirnwäsche unterziehen und die Rechte einer Frau mit Füßen treten. Ich bewundere die Autorin für ihre Kraft im Kampf, sich und ihre Kinder aus den Fängen der Sekte zu befreien!

Es ist schon vieles gesagt worden von den Vorrezendenten/innen.Ich habe von dem Buch in einer Monatszeitschrift erfahren und es gleich bei amazon bestellt.Innerhalb von zwei Tagen hatte ich es ausgelesen.Auch bei mir wollte das Kopfschütteln nicht aufhören.Es gibt so viele Begebenheiten-man kann sie einfach nicht alle aufzählen.Besonders hat mich schockiert,dass die Frauen in dieser Sekte( ca.10.000 Mitglieder) nur GeburtsMASCHINEN sind !!!Mit wieviel Liebe diese Frau sich um ihre Kinder kümmerte,dass ist schon Beispielhaft.Die beiden behinderten Kinder hatten ihr viel Kraft abgefordert und sie hat es trotzdem geschafft !!! Gibt es in Amerika einen öffentlichen Preis für diese Courage ? Von mir würde sie diesen bekommen !!! Mit diesem Buch hilft Carolyn Jessop hoffentlich anderen Sektenmitgliedern egal welcher coleur,körperlich und seelisch aus diesen Gehirnwäsche Sekten heraus zu kommen.Ich wünsche ihr alle Liebe dieser Welt .

Eine sehr bewegende Biografie einer starken Frau, die aus den Fängen der Polygamie fliehen kann. Es geht um ein Leben, das religiös beginnt und sich immer mehr als Fehler herausstellt. Es hat mich gefreut, dass Carolyn den Mut hatte zu fliehen und sich ein neues Leben außerhalb der Gemeinschaft aufgehauen könnte. Dennoch war es traurig zu lesen, dass ihre Kinder teilweise ihr Handeln verurteilt haben und gegen ihre eigene Mutter angekämpft haben, obwohl seiner das Beste für ihre Kinder wollte! Sehr interessant und absolut empfehlenswert!

Das Thema finde ich sehr interessant doch hätte ich mir dabei etwas mehr Hintergründe zum Leben in der Sekte gewünscht. Das Buch schildert weitestgehend nur das erlebte der Autorin und ihre eigene Situation. Die Schilderungen reihen sich in simplen Sätzen aneinander und es gibt kaum Beschreibungen, die die Fantasie des Lesers anregen, um Emotionen oder Stimmungen der Beteiligten mitzuerleben. Aus diesem Grunde baut man auch keine richtige Beziehung zu den Charakteren auf. Sprachlich ist das Buch schlecht - teilweise aber vielleicht auch einer schlechten Übersetzung geschuldet. Man merkt es am Satzbau, der teilweise dem englischen und nicht der deutschen Sprache folgt,

Mir hat das Buch die Augen geöffnet darüber, was alles im Namen Gottes geschieht. Wie können Menschen so blindlings einer Gemeinschaft und deren Leitern gehorchen? Ist der Verstand denn ausgeschaltet? Wo wird da die Liebe Gottes gelebt? Das Buch ist ein Appell daran, nicht einfach vorbehaltlos seinen Kopf bei Eintritt in eine religiöse Gemeinschaft an der Garderobe abzugeben, sondern die Praktiken zu hinterfragen.

Ich habe durch einen Zeitungsartikel angefangen, mich für die Mormonen zu interessieren und bin dadurch auch auf dieses Buch gestoßen. Bisher hatte ich keine Ahnung, dass es bei den Mormonen auch Fundamentalisten gibt. Dieses Buch hat mir die Augen geöffnet und ich habe erfahren, was es bedeutet, in eine fundamentalistische Sekte hineingeboren zu werden und in einem Kreislauf gefangen zu sein, aus dem es kaum ein Entrinnen gibt. Es ist mir unverständlich, wie es in unserer heutigen Zeit in den angeblich aufgeklärten USA noch Gemeinden geben kann, in denen eine Frau weniger als der Staub vor der Haustüre wert ist.5 Sterne für dieses hervorragende Buch!
